An introduction to our club from a founding member, Val Firth

The Naphill Riding Club (NRC) was formed in 1974 and shortly after became affiliated to the BHS. The first Chairman was Squadron Leader Holder, supported by Linda Elliott as Secretary and Linda Hall as Treasurer.
The committee was an enthusiastic group of local riders, who identified the need for a local riding club in the Naphill area to cater for young adults moving on from The Pony Club and adults taking up equestrian pursuits later in life.
Les Butler succeeded Squadron Leader Holder as Chairman. Open shows, gymkhanas, Prix Caprilli, riding club camp and trips to Badminton were typical events of the day.

We've always been on the front foot: NRC was the first local riding club to organise a camp, which took place at Russell Farm near Dunsmore in around 1976.
Our camps have always been popular and moved around over the years. We now hold two camps in May and July each year at Milton Keynes EC and Moreton Morrell College in Warwickshire. Their facilities are a far cry from the earlier camps!
Our first Open Show was held at West Wycombe. We moved show sites from time to time eventually ending up at Hunters Moon, Saunderton spent many happy years there with a packed-out showground. This venue was also used for club training, mini one day events, show jumping and dressage.
Trail rides have been a big part of NRC. A great deal of work goes into organising these events. Glenys Raistrick was instrumental in running these in the early years and now Janet Bayley has taken on the mantle and runs them for the club and also for charity.
NRC has always been known for its social events. While our members' appetites for discos has waned (but don't worry, there's always the Christmas party!), our most popular activities now include pub quizzes, wine tastings, talks and barbecues.
Members also compete at British Riding Club qualifiers, with many qualifying for the regional and national championships. There is always plenty of support at these events, along with plenty of baked goods too!
The ethos of our club remains true to this day: to encourage members to ‘have a go’ and enjoy themselves.
