THE NATIONAL TRUST BRADENHAM ESTATE

PERMITTED HORSE TRACKS

For many years the National Trust have allowed permit holders to ride paths on land at the rear of Shana Riding School and between Bradenham Woods Lane and Smalldean Lane.  There is also one path on the other side of Bradenham Woods Lane which links in with the existing public bridleway and from these into National Trust permissive paths for riders.

This facility is open to all local riders, Naphill riding club is involved as we do the paperwork for the National Trust and they generously allow us to keep half of the income raised.  The fee is. £10 for an individual and £20 for a family. Permits run from1 January to 31 December each year.

If you would like to ride the trails, please complete the application form below and post it with your cheque to the address on the form. You will be asked to sign an agreement, allocated a permit number and provided with a map or the permitted tracks. A renewal will be emailed to you each year. Once membership/renewal is complete we provide the local National Trust warden with details of permit holders. We also ask permit holders themselves to help ensure that all users do have a current permit.

We are very lucky to have this facility at such a low price, so even if you only ride the paths once a year, please be fair and pay for a permit. It is also essential that you keep to the paths and do not stray onto footpaths. The bridle paths are shared with walkers so please give way and take care.Livery owners at Shana need to apply for a pass in the normal way.

SR4H – Safer Routes for Horses

A little over 2 years ago, Val Firth and I (and doubtless many others) were grumbling about the dangers of riding on the roads, in our area of Speen and Great Hampden.

On the basis of “if you don’t ask you don’t get “ , we approached the Hampden Estate to see if they’d make some off road tracks available so that riders could avoid 2 sections of local roads which have become steadily more dangerous, with increasing levels of traffic, and ,it seems, decreasing standards of manners on the part of a significant minority of drivers.

Lord Hollenden and Swynfen Parker-Jarvis were supportive of our ideas, routes were agreed and fund raising started.

A survey I had earlier carried out showed about 115 horses and ponies in the immediate area who would be likely to benefit from the scheme (not including retired and young stock)

A tree safety survey was conducted, so that the estates public liability insurance would be valid, and this spring the estate staff began installing gates, some fencing and some surfacing by the gates.

On July 1st the scheme opened. It seemed a long haul to get there, but well worth it. Members pay £30 p.a. for an individual permit, £50 for a family, and receive florescent tabards, marked with SR4H (Safer Routes For Horses).

To raise the money needed, apart from subscriptions, we have run two talks, by a vet and a physiotherapist, and obtained 2 grants, one from the Bucks County Council via the community leaders fund, and one from a local charity which has paid for the tabards and saddle tags.

We hope that the scheme will gradually be extended beyond the 2 new tracks (and the original track). This largely depends upon people sticking to the rules and not riding off the agreed tracks

After all this work, you can imagine what Val and I have threatened to do to any rule breakers!!

The scheme is under the auspices of the Riding club, with its money in a separate “ring fenced” account and Val and I responsible for organizing permits etc.
